The Client and Types of Work
Carle Health is a vertically integrated system of eight award-winning hospitals and multispecialty physician group practices with over 1,300 doctors and advanced practice providers located within Illinois.
Over a period of years I worked on their primary website Carle.org and designed the Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute website. Both utilized a simple design system to maintain hundreds of pages used by a wide range of users all seeking help with their complicated health issues, all following the WCAG 2.0+ and ADA Compliance guidelines.
Additionally, I assisted with compliance audits and analyzing user testing results for certain website features like Find a Doctor and Ways to Get Care.
Project Highlights
Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute
Using the existing Carle.org design system, I designed the website for their research institute. It enables users to start research studies with Carle, get involved in various research programs, and find open studies and clinical trials.

Design System and Example Content Page
The website featured a handful of flexible modules, but due to the vast amount of content being supplied from different staff, doctors, and nurses, we began to notice inconsistencies with how it was being displayed.
To help mitigate this issue, I created an example page for Carle to reference when writing content-heavy pages that showcases different modules and what they can be used for.

Carle’s Commitment to Quality
Carle asked for assistance in creating a group of pages dedicated to their Quality Management System. Their goal was to show their evidence-based best practice data from multiple locations for various categories such as Emergency Care, Inpatient Rehabilitation, and Patient Experience. It compares Carle’s results with national and state averages and other resources when relevant.
It was important that each location has clearly displayed information and results while being templated enough to replicate for new locations in the future.

Conclusion and Thoughts
Working with Carle was much more than the few pages I’ve shown, but all fall within using the same design system and established templates. I had never worked on a website of this scale before, and due to the context of healthcare and being a hospital, had to be extra vigilent in what image

Conclusion and Thoughts
Working with Carle was much more than the few pages I’ve shown, but they all fall within using the same design system and established templates. I had never worked on a website of this scale before, and due to the context, had to be extra vigilant in what imagery was shown and how messages were displayed.
Similar to The UPS Store project, it felt nice working on a project that is meant to help others. Healthcare is an intimidating and confusing topic, and I hope my contributions to Carle helped make it slightly less so.
